Brown shrugs off Levy's criticism

Written: 28th April, 2008

The prime minister has dismissed suggestions by Labour's former chief fundraiser, Lord Levy, that Tony Blair believes he cannot beat David Cameron.

Gordon Brown said: "The issues ahead of us are more important than a few comments from one or two people."

Steering the economy through difficult times was more important than "gossip or rumour," Mr Brown told the BBC.

But he admitted that abolishing the 10p tax rate - blamed for hurting Britain's poorest workers - was an "omission".
